The Learning Outside the Classroom manifesto recognises that amazing things happen when young people move outside their immediate and accustomed environment to learn from first-hand experiences. Our most cherished memories from school rarely revolve around classrooms or whiteboards. They recall trips to museums, adventurous activities and sports days: The times we left our desks and went on an adventure.
Adventure based education is widely available in specialist centres in the wild places of the UK but it comes at a price, both monetary and with disruption to the timetable. At Totem we believe there are adventures available to your pupils every day, on their doorstep.
By treating adventure education as a state of mind, this one day workshop allows teachers to create their own challenging and safe learning experiences beyond the classroom and beyond the expectations of their pupils.
What is covered?
- Why Adventure?
- How to have an adventure (practical)
- Staying safe and risk assessment
- Designing and managing an Adventure Education experience (practical)
- Working with Outdoor Professionals
Also included is a handbook for all participants with ideas for activities, tips on keeping participants happy, planning forms, information on keeping your group safe and details of further resources.
Venue
Ideally, this course takes place at your school, keeping costs down for you and providing hands-on experience in the environment in which your pupils will be having their adventures. If this isn't possible, another venue can be arranged.

The price to run this workshop is £550 for up to 6 participants. This includes all course documentation. For more than six participants, please get in touch. If you only have one or two participants, we occasionally run 'open' courses, please let us know if you are interested.
